FOV Calculator & Monitor Viewing Distance

Find a practical starting distance for your monitor, understand what the result means, and convert game field-of-view angles.

How far should you sit from your monitor?

Field of view (FOV) means how wide a view is. Your screen’s viewing angle tells you how much of your vision it fills. Start with your desk measurements.

Your practical starting point

Try about 82.1 cm from your screen

That makes your 27-inch display fill about 40° of your horizontal view. At your current 60 cm, it fills 53° — larger in your view than your chosen target.

Screen width

59.8 cm

Desk adjustment to try

Move back about 22.1 cm

Try it during a short session. Adjust for readable text, room to see the whole screen, and your own comfort. A bigger viewing angle feels more immersive; a smaller one makes it easier to take in the edges.

What this means for in-game FOV

Screen viewing angle and a game’s FOV slider are different. A shooter’s FOV controls how much of the game world fits on screen; it does not need to equal your monitor’s physical angle. Matching the physical angle can help perspective in a correctly configured single-screen racing simulator.

For that simulator use, your current position corresponds to about 53° horizontal or 31.3° vertical. Check which convention the simulator uses.

Convert a game’s horizontal / vertical FOV

Use an actual angle at this aspect ratio. A game’s 4:3-reference slider or special scaling is not automatically translated.

90° horizontal equals 58.7° vertical at 1.8:1 aspect ratio.

Flat-screen geometry: viewing angle = 2 × atan(screen width ÷ (2 × eye distance)). Curvature, multi-monitor projection, visual acuity and game-specific slider conventions are not modeled. Use exact resolution for the most accurate ultrawide ratio.

Which FOV value should I enter?

Use the actual horizontal or vertical FOV. A game's slider may use a fixed 4:3 reference, a different aspect ratio, or special scaling. This calculator converts geometric angles, not game-specific slider values.

Is there one ideal viewing distance?

No. The distance result matches a geometric viewing angle for a flat display. Comfort, eyesight, screen size, and game preference still matter; curved screens are not modeled.
