The Samsung 990 Pro is the perfect PCIe Gen 4 NVMe SSD, if you ignore the price. While that is easy for us to admit, it's unfortunately a bit harder to explain why.

At GTT, we find it kind of difficult and annoying to talk about storage devices because at the end of the day, that's really all they are: storage. The main specs to cover are usually just price, speeds, PCIe generation, and capacity. There isn't a whole lot to talk about on the surface, but we promise to deliver the actual, underlying reasons why this premium, name brand NVMe is absolutely worth purchasing as a gamer.

Quick Summary:

For most, its going to work perfectly. There is no direct downsides, it quite literally will do anything, its great for downloading games, transferring large files for work, decreasing loading screens to near what almost feels instantaneous when on, and takes care of texture pop-in issues when compared to old drives like HDDs. This is simply achieved from its extremely high speeds on PCIe Gen 4, sitting around 7,450MB/s Sequential Read Speed and 6,900 MB/s Sequential Write Speed.

Pros

  • Samsung Magician Software: Checking vitals for all your M.2s has never been easier than with Samsung's software. You can monitor health, protect data, fully wipe the drive clean with secure erase, and manage your Samsung drive updates. It is even usable with any M.2 brand you own, minus a few brand-specific features and details.

  • Fastest Gen 4 NVMe: If you want the fastest Gen 4 drive, even if the real-world difference isn't massive compared to mid-range options, this is pretty much the top-tier drive to purchase.

Cons

  • Cost: This drive is very expensive. Samsung is consistently the most costly type of NVMe storage you can buy. Between usually ($430 - $640) depending heavily on purchase location and sales.

  • Check For Bugs: In its early launch days, these drives released with a notorious firmware bug that caused the drive's reported health to wear and tear down rapidly. While it is highly unlikely to encounter this out of the box in 2026, you should still immediately double-check Samsung Magician to make sure your firmware is fully up to date.

Overall, we find it to be one of the best M.2's, the speeds are accurate and consistently allows us to boot into windows in seconds, download large 4k textures for games in minutes, and play games with no stutters when it comes to storage. Of course, follow the rules and don't overfill your drive leaving some extra space depending your storage size.

Now, with everything already said, what could possibly improve those speeds for gaming performance or daily use? Actually, one major thing is the NAND flash configuration, and most importantly here, the dedicated DRAM cache on the NVMe. Samsung handles this beautifully. Without a DRAM cache, your SSD has to constantly search the slower primary NAND storage just to find out where your data is located. When a modern game rapidly streams massive texture files on the fly, a DRAM-less drive can easily get overwhelmed, causing those previously mentioned issues like micro-stutters and late in-game texture pop-in. Having that dedicated, high-speed cache allows the drive to pull up asset maps instantly, completely mitigating those stutters. Which also means keeping your eyes out for NVMe's, usually budget drives, that are DRAM-less.

Who Shouldn't Purchase The Samsung 990 Pro

The Samsung 990 Pro is great and all and pretty much does everything you need but there is a dramatically good chance this isn't everyone's first pick. Why?

  • Budget Comes First: This has to be one of the most expensive Gen 4 NVMes ever released. We can share with honesty that if you can't afford this, try a cheaper option. If you don't mind slightly reduced Gen 4 speeds, give a great budget NVMe a go, like the Crucial P3 Plus Gen 4 NVMe.

  • Need More Speed: There is a good chance that a Gen 5 M.2 NVMe might be better suited for you instead, assuming you are dealing with heavy workloads where you will genuinely benefit from those extreme, overkill speeds.

The Verdict

The verdict is that it's another recommendation from us. If you don't have any budget concerns and are okay with Gen 4 speeds. Then you are going to find that this is one of the best NVMe products on the market. Absolutely grab this M.2.

The only personal advice we can really give when purchasing the Samsung 990 Pro just to look out for deals, check for updates early, and keep your PC budget in mind. Storage speed isn't the be all end all to gaming performance and higher FPS numbers.
